Women's Day amid Afghan Women Progress and Challenges

Women in Afghanistan have gone through difficult times in the past several decades. Many believe that Afghan women have progressed since President Karzai came to power, but women's rights defence institutions believe there has been little progress. Women's rights institutions say Afghan women are tackling with different sorts of violence in the country, including forced marriages, premature marriages, sexual harassment and torture. Statistics suggest that in the past nine months more than 2,400 cases of violence against women have been recorded in the capital Kabul while 1,700 other cases of violence have been recorded in other provinces.
