Comings and Goings!

The past few days have been interesting to say the least. Since Afghan's past President was assassinated a few days ago the roads have been all locked down. The current President (Karzi) declared a 3 day holiday for mourning. Then they had a 2 day funeral. We were going out to dinner last Thursday but couldn't move because all the streets were black (can't move). Even the back roads were all blocked. I couldn't get a ride to church because -- you guessed it all roads were blocked so I walked to Church and had to walk home as well. Because of the road situation the ones that were supposed to speak couldn't so they asked me to speak. I thought about using one of the talks I gave before since almost everyone in the branch wasn't there the last time I spoke and the only other ones were old senile guys like me who couldn't remember what they had for breakfast let alone what I spoke on the last time. As luck would have it the other councilor asked the ones that he had asked for the next week to move their talks up. So I didn't have to speak.

It's funny when I come in the gate in the morning the local guards (Afghans) are all bundled up in heavy coats and scarfs over their face to keep the cold out -- 59 degrees. I waltz in with a short sleeve shirt. I am loving the cooler weather. It is still getting up to 80 degrees during the day but cooling off to the upper 50s at night.

One other thing -- to give you an idea how naive we are. The other day we went out to dinner at the local drug lord's steak house and as we were leaving there were guys looking under their car and the guy I was with asked them if the lost their cat and they said no they were looking for bombs!! Never crossed our minds to do that.
