UNITED NATIONS, Jun. 29, 2010 (Xinhua News Agency) -- The United Nations condemned Tuesday the shooting that occurred in the Afghan capital Kabul early Tuesday, which killed a UN staff member, and urged those responsible to be brought to justice, UN spokesman Martin Nesirky said here.
"The United Nations condemns violence against any of its personnel under any circumstances," Nesirky told reporters here in a daily press briefing. "Those responsible for the killing should be brought to justice without delay."
The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) confirms that one UN staff member, an Afghan national, was killed, and the other Afghan staff member who was involved in the incident was unharmed, said Nesirky.
The UN offers its sincerest condolences to the family of the staff member who was killed, he said.
According to a statement Tuesday from UNAMA, the circumstances of the shooting, which took place when a UN vehicle came under attack, are unclear.
United Nations security teams are working with Afghan security institutions to assist investigations, the statement further said.
No groups or individuals have claimed responsibility.
Late last October Taliban insurgents attacked a UN guest house in Kabul left at least five UN employees dead.
