Afghanistan to Export Tons of Raisins

Afghanistan will soon start export of 22 tonnes of raisin to Europe and other parts of the world, officials said.

Exports Development Office says the country's high quality raisin has attracted many markets in the world.

Afghan women are in the centre of raisin industry.

Raisin processing in Afghanistan is now done according to international standards.

Afghan raisin is sold at around $2,500 per tonne.

Last year Afghanistan exported only 9,000 tonnes of raisin, officials said.

Minister of Commerce and Industries, Anwarulhaq Ahadi, said Afghan raisin export to Europe and some other countries is increasing.

Canada is also among the countries to which Afghan raisin will be exported, the Ministry said.

"This year 22 tonnes of raisin will be exported and it will hopefully increase," Mr Ahadi said.

Lack of better processing facilities last year was the main reason for a reduction in raisin exports.
